Name of Best Practice: Daily Activity Duffel Bags (DAD)
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To promote physical activity outside of the physical education classroom.
Materials Needed: Small duffel bags, various pieces of physical education equipment, booklet with instructions, literary connection, blank journal
Each week one student in each first and second grade classroom takes home the D.A.D. bag. Inside the bag is equipment designed for use with other family members. The first grade bags contain short jump ropes, bean bags, frisbee, small playground ball, directions for activities, a book, and a blank journal. The second grade bags contain tennis balls instead of bean bags and a different book to read. Occasionally, a bag is customized for a child who needs extra practice with a specific skill or piece of equipment. The reading and writing exercises are tied to state learning standards in physical education and language arts. For example, second graders read "Franklin Is Bossy" and write what characteristics they think are important in order to be a cooperative team member. Students take the bags home on Thursday and return them on Mondays.
