Name of Best Practice: Safety Coloring Book
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To promote safety.
Suggested Grade Level: K-8
Materials Needed: Safety information (the Internet is a great resource), pencils, crayons, and plenty of paper.
The older students at our school create safety coloring books for the younger students in the school. I have the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students draw pages for the "St. Paul The Apostle Catholic School Safety Coloring Book". The students work in small groups on an assigned safety topic. They are given safety information on their topic, pencils, and paper. I ask each student in the group to read and discuss the information and then draw one coloring book page. Each group is asked to design at least one page that is appropriate for our Kindergarden and 1st grade students, 2nd and 3rd grade students, and 4th and 5th grade students on their topic. Each page must state a safety rule and have a picture depicting the rule. I make copies of the pages and staple the coloring books together complete with a cover page. The classroom teachers have a unique safety resourse to use in their classrooms. Some of the safety topics that we used were; Fire Safety, Pedestrian Safety, Bike Safety, Stranger Danger, Playground Safety, Water Safety, and Home Safety. The best pages came from the students personal experiences!
