Name of Best Practice: Morning Fitness Tips
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To inform students about the value of fitness in a fun and innovative way.
Suggested Grade Level: K-5
Materials Needed: Large sweatshirt stuffed so you look like a person with large muscles, video camera, sunglasses and hat to mask your true identity.
My student teacher and I wanted to do something innovative and fun for our students during Fitness Month. We made use of the morning video news show to broadcast our messages. We basically adopted the "Hans and Franz" skit from the Saturday Night Live Show. Each day we would come up with an idea to present to the students during fitness month. We spoke about different muscles, aerobic fitness, how to exercise properly, etc. We also did informational bits on nutrition and the importance of having a healthy mind and body. Our morning skits became so popular with the staff and kids that we began to plug other areas in the school. We did a skit in the library getting kids excited about reading. Another was about the importance of keeping the lunch room and school clean of garbage. This is a great way to get your kids excited about learning and to pay attention in the morning during your announcement time.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Don't go overboard. Remember, it is about the message and less about the characters. The characters just help sell the message.
