Teacher: Genni Lach who teaches at Harrison Elementary in Lakewood, OH. Genni Lach can be contacted at Genni.Lach@lakewood.k12.oh.us.
Name of Best Practice: Rock Write-N-Roll
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To give students and their families an opportunity to participate in a physical activity and a classroom activity in the same evening.
Suggested Grade Level: 2-5
Materials Needed: Roller Skates, music/cd player and microphone, Polaroid camera/film, small pre-bound white blank booklets, pencils, chart paper or chalk board.
This activity was a collaborative effort between myself and our literacy specialist. The students at the school and their family members signed up to attend. The evening was half roller skating and half writing a book about the experience. A polaroid picture was taken of the family to include in their memory book. After skating, we retreated to the cafeteria to write a poem about the experience which would be written in their book that we provided. As a group, we brainstormed ideas and thoughts about the evening and their experience. Each family got to skate and take home a book about their experience.
Variations:
The set up of the evening could be done in different ways depending on the number of participants.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Make sure that you know how many families (participants) will be attending. Have them sign up prior to the event. This is necessary for having enough skates in the proper sizes. Make sure you have enough adult size skates. Make sure you teach the parents the proper ways to fall and get up safely as you taught their children.
