Teacher: Phil Tuls
who teaches at Grant Middle School in Grant, MI.
Name of Best Practice: Sports Shorts
Rationale/Purpose of Event:
To support our school goal of writing across the curriculum with an interesting assignment which rewards student participation by putting their writing on the World Wide Web.
Suggested Grade Level: 5-8
Materials Needed: Paper and pencil or access to the Internet.
PE students write brief articles of 100 words or more on PE and sports related topics which are then put on the Internet on the Sports Shorts Webzine on our PE web site. Students may also create sports related artwork or cartoons which can be scanned and put on our Web page. I publish three editions of Sports Shorts - Fall, Winter, and Spring. Students receive credit for their PE grade, plus are rewarded for their articles with a free gel pen. Students may receive help as needed from classroom teacher or a parent. To access the Sport Shorts follow these directions: Go to: Click on the "Middle School" link The short articles are in alphabetical order by last name. Click on student's name to read their article.
Click on the "Unified Arts" link
Click on the "PhysEd" link
Click on "Sports Shorts" link at the top
Variations:
Articles that students write are given to high school students who get community service credit for typing and emailing it to me. I don't have to word process the articles. I can just copy and paste. It's a win-win situation.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Retyping student's articles takes some time on my part, so I give students extra credit for emailing their articles to me. I act as the editor for the webzine. Articles are brief, so it doesn't take much time. Suggestions for article topics are posted on the Web site and also handed to students. Give a copy of the assignment with its due date to the school's language arts teachers.
