Teacher: Ana Reutinger
who teaches at Pickett Elementary School in Clemmons, NC.
Name of Best Practice: Game-Design Writing Contest
Rationale/Purpose of Event:
Increase motivation for physical activity AND encourage students to think creatively and work on writing skills.
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials Needed: None
Create a school-wide game design writing contest. Students need to create their own Physical Education game. Provide students and staff an inventory of any equipment they may use. You can determine what template you would like your students to do to design the game/activity. I have my students draw a diagram of the game, list the rules and list the equipment needs. All games should be safe and include a high level of physical activity for everyone. The top game submissions will be made into a school game book and also will have a chance to be played in class. Choose one top submission per grade level or class depending on how many entries you receive. You may also wish to create a booklet of all top games to hand out at the end of the year.
Variations:
Have students work with a partner. Involve the classroom teacher in the process.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Show the students an example of an acceptable game. Remind students that they need to create an ORIGINAL game. Have a template for the game/activity: It should include at least these items: Name, Objective, equipment needs, diagram, procedures, rules and safety. Promote this schoolwide as it encourages teacher/student involvement.
