Name of Best Practice: Healthy Snacker Tracker

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To encourage students to bring in healthy snacks.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: Posters

Healthy Snacker Tracker

All students at our school participated in the Healthy Snacker Trackers. Each day teachers would record how many students brought in healthy snacks in their homeroom. The teacher or students would record the number on their snacker tracker. Each classroom received one poster with 3 calendar months on it to record their healthy snackers. At the end of the month, the class with the highest percentage of healthy snackers would recieve a "make your own smoothie" party as well as an extra recess, for their healthy choices. Below is the letter that went home to the parents.

Linden Elementary is learning how to make healthy choices! During Red Ribbon Week, we pledged to take care of our bodies by staying away from drugs. Another way to make healthy choices is by eating healthy whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteins during snack time.

Each class will receive a poster to record how many students packed a healthy snack each day. At the end of the month, the class that has the highest percentage of participation will win a "Make Your Own Smoothie" Party!

Ideas for healthy snack choices: (Peanut free classrooms still apply)

̃ Any fruit or vegetable serving

̃ Pretzel sticks

̃ Whole Wheat Goldfish crackers

̃ Baked tortilla chips

̃ Sliced apples and peanut butter

̃ String Cheese

̃ Granola bar

̃ Wheat crackers and peanut butter

̃ Rice Cakes and low fat cottage cheese

̃ Low- fat yogurt

* Handful of almonds or cashews

Thank you for helping your child make healthy snack choices. Here’s to staying on track with our snacks!

Variations:

Provide one month for healthy snackers and maybe one month for physical activity in the classroom. It would motivate not only the students but the teachers as well.

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

Provide weekly announcements, encourage students to ask questions on what is a healthy snack and why. Be mindful of any allergies the students may have ie. peanut, etc.
