Teacher: Seth Martin who teaches at Tahoe Valley Elementary in South Lake Tahoe, CA.

Name of Best Practice: Commercial Exercise

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To get kids working on the aspects of health related fitness away from school.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Worksheet with a list of leveled muscular strength and cardiovascular activities that can be done in a small space.

Commercial Exercise

My students live in a climate where activity in the winter months decreases and/or stops away from my classroom. In an attempt to help prevent this trend I encourage my kids to do commercial exercises. The children are asked to do exercises or movements whenever a commercial comes on when they are watching tv, this can also be applied to a break during a video game, or even ending a chapter in a book. Each exercise is explained in class and then listed on the worksheet given to my students. Exercises are leveled for various muscular strength and endurance levels (e.g., Knee push ups vs. regular). They can then log the activities they do and turn them in for extra credit. While this does often couple with a negative, screen time, it does try to turn that into a positive with activity.
