Name of Best Practice: Olympics Wax Works Museum

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To have children learn more about the Olympic games and the sports involved in them.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Sporting equipment and costumes for each sport represented.

Olympics Wax Works Museum

The children researched a sport from the Summer Olympic games either individually or in small groups. Their task was to find out how the game they chose is played and what equipment is needed to play. After gaining this information they acquired the necessary equipment (they could borrow, buy, or make) and decided on a costume that would best represent this sport. They then rehearsed a static position to show their sport just like a wax figure. Additionally, they came up with a movement to demonstrate their sport (like charades).

An invitation was then extended to all the other classes in the school one at a time to come and view our wax muesum in our activity space. On signal, the children demonstrated their sport in their costume one group at a time. When all groups had completed their demonstrations the children watching could ask questions of my students. All the children loved participating and it was a huge success with all the other grades who came to view our tribute to the Sydney Summer Olympic Games.

This idea can be used for the Winter Olympics as well.
