Teacher: Bob Nicholson and Todd Gregory who teaches at Heritage Intermediate in Wentzville, MO. Bob Nicholson and Todd Gregory can be contacted at robertnicholson@wentzville.k12.mo.us.
Name of Best Practice: Shooting for the Stars in Presidential Fitness
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To encourage students to set goals for their individual fitness tests, as well as to practice a positive work ethic towards completing those goals.
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials Needed: Construction paper stars, thin markers.
Before I begin the Presidential Fitness testing, I tell the students what the Presidential and National test scores are for their specific age group. Then each student is given a star on which they write their name and their own personal goals. You will need to teach them about setting realistic goals and give examples. I use each leg of the star for a different test i.e., Shuttle run, Mile run, curl-ups, pull-ups, sit & reach. When the students have finished with their star, we go out and hang them in the hallway. After all 800 students have completed a star the hall way looks AMAZING! Additional author on this Best Practice is Todd Gregory.
Variations:
Set up practice stations with all of the tests except the mile. Incorporate jump rope or another cardio activity to substitute for the Mile practice. Include Star making as one of the stations.
Teaching Suggestions/Tips:
Ask a teachers aid or some older students to help cut out stars. You'll need a ton! Reminder ~ The students also need to set realistic goals in which you need to discuss this with them.
