Name of Best Practice: Wall of Fame/Wall of Shame

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To show and allow discussion about the "good and bad" things that happen in the world of sports. Typically they have nothing to do with winning or losing.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-12

Materials Needed: Poster board (or something to hang articles from), Appropriate newspaper, or magazine articles.

Newspaper or magazine articles are collected that demonstrate the "good and bad" in the world of sports. While these articles have nothing to do with winning, or losing, they do have to do with ideas such as sportsmanship, fair play, and hard work. These articles (that are collected by students and teachers) are posted on a bulletin board outside of the gym. These articles are also listed on our web site (which you can see below).

Whenever a new article is added, there is a discussion about its implication to our physical education class. For example, when an article talks about an athlete's negative reaction to a coaches request, we talk about what would happen to the student if he/she was in that same situation. How would they be treated if they argued with their coach, or teacher? How would their parents be treated if they threatened their boss? We focus a lot on the positive side of sports as well.

By using examples such as these and asking questions in this way, we get a chance to take what our students see on television and in the newspapers and apply it to our classes, in a way that they can understand.
