Name of Best Practice: Sneaker Wall
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To encourage and recognize students for engaging in physical activity outside of school.
Suggested Grade Level: K-5
Materials Needed: Pictures or drawings of blank sneakers that you can write on
Since May is National Fitness Month, I do something special for the month. This idea, however, can be done throughout the year. In our program we really stress how important physical activity is--in and out of physical education class. Therefore, for every 30 minutes the students exercise at home (i.e., riding bikes, mowing lawn, moving with parents, baseball practice, dance class, etc.) they receive a blank sneaker made out of paper. (To verify the activity was done we have parents sign the back of the sneaker.) They get to take each sneaker they have earned, color it as they wish, and write their name and type of activity they partook in. We then take these "sneakers" and proudly display them on the gym walls (could also be done in the hallway or other prominent places in the school). The kids enjoying seeing their accomplishments on the walls, it decorates the gym nicely, and it looks great for those special event nights (i.e., back to school and parent-teacher nights).
