Teacher: Jane Gregg who teaches at Myrtle H. Stevens School in Rocky Hill, CT. Jane Gregg can be contacted at janegregg@aol.com.

Name of Best Practice: Snack Attack

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To encourage students to choose healthy snacks.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Notebook to record points, a silly looking hat or baseball cap

Snack Attack

I glued pieces of fake fruit to a baseball cap. I put the cap on and "snack attack" (e.g., visit) a homeroom. I give a point for each student that has a snack that is low in fat and sugar. The winning homeroom recieves a bag of apples or oranges once a week. You can keep points on a weekly or monthly basis. I posted a list of suggested snacks in each homeroom and talked to the students about reading food labels and planning their snacks. The students are always wondering if I am going to attack their class and have becomed very aware of a good snack. The students have been so excited about this program and love to see me walk down the hallway with my silly snack attack hat.
