Name of Best Practice: Locomotor License

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To motivate the primary grade students to learn their locomotor skills and reward them with a license.

Suggested Grade Level: K-2

Materials Needed: Colored card stock(different color for each class), lamination, digital camera.

I have found that some younger students struggle with certain locomotor skills but are not motivated to master them. I came up with the License idea while I was student teaching at Acworth Elementary in Georgia.

Students would be tested on the different locomoter skills and once they have mastered each one they would be given a "license". The license could be created in many ways, but I have a picture of the student along with their name and the title "Locomotor License" printed at the top. This gives them a reward and makes them feel more adult as they proudly display their new license.

Variations:

The can be adapted to any activity or unit that has individual skills that you would like the students to become proficient in. (i.e. License to Throw--underhand, overhand, sidearm, include catching with two hands or one.)

Teaching Suggestions/Tips:

This activity could be combined with their art time as the students could be allowed to design or decorate their own license. If you want to have things uniform, you design the front and let each student add their own individual creativity to the back before you get the cards laminated.
