Teacher: Michael Kroemer who teaches at Cornwall ES in Cornwall, NY. Michael Kroemer can be contacted at dragon1@frontiernet.net.

Name of Best Practice: Physical Education's Word of the Week

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To provide students with a weekly program that challenges them to find the correct spelling and definitions of words commonly used in physical education.

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: A box for entries, winner certificates, and if possible sponsored donated prizes.

Physical Education's Word of the Week

The program is first initiated by sending an explanation letter to all the classroom teachers. Teachers are asked to support the program by reviewing or teaching basic dictionary skills. With this in mind, each Monday during the morning announcements, a new word is announced (e.g. cooperation, sportsmanship, communication). Using a piece of paper as an entry from, children are asked to write the word down, spell it correctly, and define it. Additionally, students are asked to include their name and their teacher's name on the entry form and place it in a box outside the physical education teacher's office. On Friday morning of the same week, the physical education teacher or previous winners randomly pick new winners. If the entries that are picked have the word spelled and defined correctly, they win! After the winners are selected, they are announced during the morning announcements along with what prizes they won and the contributing sponsor. Later that day, the physical education teacher personally delivers the prizes to the winners.
