Teacher: Bill Mosley and Kahlil Cunningham who teaches at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, GA. Bill Mosley and Kahlil Cunningham can be contacted at billmosley@westminster.net.
Name of Best Practice: Physical Education Demonstration Night
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To educate the parents on the most current practices used today in children's physical education and to allow them the opportunity to see age appropriate and developmentally appropriate activities and equipment.
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials Needed: Anything you need to showcase the developmentally appropriate activities you practice in your PE program.
When the parents arrive at the gymnasium they are given a program that describes what they are about to see. One class at a time comes into the gym for their demonstration. As the program proceeds we describe facets of our program that we feel are beneficial to the children. These include non-elimination games, intratask variation, national standards, instant activities, etc. These are shown and demonstrated so the parents can see exactly what they are and why they are beneficial. We also have an exhibit table set up with a variety of PE equipment. Student portfolios are also out for the parents to see. Last but not least, a copy of the national standards along with many texts that we use in our teaching are displayed. You may also want to include the Developmentally Appropriate documents as well. Classroom teachers and administrators attend the program. This has been very good for our program.
