Teacher: Nathan N. Ned who teaches at Pioneer Elementary in Boise, ID. Nathan N. Ned can be contacted at nedn@mailhost.sd02.k12.id.us.
Name of Best Practice: PE is...Banners
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To introduce many other ideas to our students/teachers/parents about what Physical Education is all about at Pioneer Elementary. Not only is it fun, but, for example, "P.E. is Skills", "P.E. is Honesty", "P.E. is Muscle Endurance", etc.
Suggested Grade Level: K-5
Materials Needed: Access to computer, printer and software (i.e., PrintShop, Printmaster) that has the ability to produce banners or signs. Once the banner is set-up I only change the font, the graphic, the color, and the "is" and save it using the appropriate name each time.
My "PE is..." banners allow me to introduce things like sportsmanship, honesty, skills, the four aspects of fitness, etc. in a way that provides a visual reference for the students and others. Let's say that we have been doing an activity and a sportsmanship issue comes up. I can call a quick "huddle" near the "P.E. is Sportsmanship" banner and talk about sportsmanship and how it relates to this particular activity. Or, we have been practicing "stepping with the opposite foot" for the skill of throwing, I can call a huddle near the "P.E. is Skills" banner and ask the students to show me a new skill they have learned. This naturally helps me with my evaluation process. The possibilities are endless and has helped my program immensely.
