Teacher: Gary Walton who teaches at Merchantville ES in Merchantville, NJ. Gary Walton can be contacted at garyw6363@hotmail.com.
Name of Best Practice: Outdoor Recreation Field Trip
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To expose students to lifetime fitness activities.
Suggested Grade Level: 6-8
Materials Needed: Location which has an area for canoeing, hiking, or other outdoor recreational activities.
Many students have never had the opportunity to participate in outdoor recreational activites. To combat this unfortunate situation students from Merchantville Elementary School are taken to a local YMCA camp for a day of hiking, canoeing, and beach volleyball.
As a follow-up activity students are invited to brainstorm other possible locations or community resources that also offer recreational activites. Literature and brochures describing these locations are then brought to class with the hope that students and their families will visit some of these locations.
