Name of Best Practice: Muscle Journal

Rationale/Purpose of Event: Through the utilization of journals an indepth analysis of seven muscles is afforded to students.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-8

Materials Needed: Muscle journal, art supplies, and physical education equipment for activities.

Muscle Journal

Students are provided with a muscle journal which includes a front and back picture of the following muscles: triceps, biceps, abdominal muscles, quadriceps, hamstrings, gastrocnemius, and tibialis. The journal also includes some stretching and strengthening exercises, as well as physical activities in which the muscles are utilized.

Each week one of the seven muscles is focused upon during class time. For example, if on a given week, the biceps were chosen to be highlighted the following would occur. First students will locate biceps on themselves and on others. Next, students will utilize their journal by coloring in the picture of the biceps. After a teacher facilitated brainstorming session, students are asked to write additional exercises that help strengthen and stretch the biceps, as well as activities in which the biceps are utilized. Throughout the week the biceps are emphasized in all lessons. This process is done for each muscle.

At the end of the muscle study, students are given their muscle journal to be used as a future reference.
