Name of Best Practice: Heart Fair
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To have students demonstrate their knowledge of the heart and heart disease by creating and presenting a project at the annual Heart Fair.
Suggested Grade Level: 3-5
Materials Needed: Depends on the project
Students in fifth grade design a booth for the Heart Fair. The booth must inform people of how to have and maintain a healthy heart. The students are placed in groups of 5 and have 2 months to create their booth. We tell the students that their booth will be graded for creativity, appearance, content, and presentation. Tables are set up in the cafeteria for each group on the day of the Heart Fair. The booth is then presented to all the students and teachers at our school in the span of an hour. The event is similar to a carnival/science fair. Some of the best ideas for booths include:
The students are very creative! We have done this for 3 years now and each year gets better and better.
