Name of Best Practice: PTO Meeting/Gym Show
Rationale/Purpose of Event:
To promote our Physical Education program and familiarize parents with our program and introduce them to our Practical Living Curriculum Standards. This program allows us to discuss how our program aligns with state and NASPE standards. Students demonstrate how our program prepares and encourages students to practice skills and be active for a lifetime.
Suggested Grade Level: K - 1
Materials Needed: Manipulatives and various equipment that are used during the show.
We had our Kindergarten and First Grade students demonstrate basic activities from our Physical Education classes during our first PTO meeting of the year. This entices new parents to come to our school and see that we have exciting learning opportunities for their children. I have six classes participating. The first performance was a K class demonstrating our different warm-up exercises. The next was also a K class demonstrating jumping over jump ropes lying on the ground with forward and backward jumps, bell hops, frog jumps, etc. The K class also played helicopter where all students jump. The third class was a 1st grade class that performed simple rope jumping techniques. The fourth class was a 1st grade class that demonstrated different eye-hand activities with Bean Bags and various movement exploration. The fifth class was a 1st grade class that demonstrated utilizing hula hoops and performed different activities with the hoops. The last group was a K class and they closed the show with the Chicken Dance. All this was put to great motivating music and lasted about 20 minutes. Students practiced only what we did in class and I lead just like in class so we didn't take away from other activities/learning.
Variations:
This as an early year program that can be followed in the spring with more "complicated" skills to show student personal growth in the program. Add activities that incorporate skills acquisition along with teamwork, communication, listening, life-skills, etc. We need to show the diversity of our programs and "WOW" our parents with the newest and latest ideas in PE.
