Teacher: Mary Driemeyer who teaches at Sappington Elementary in St. Louis, MO. Mary Driemeyer can be contacted at mdriemeyer@lindberghschools.ws.
Name of Best Practice: Cardio-Character Club
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To promote an active lifestyle and the demonstation of good character (honesty, integrity, and good sportsmanship) while staying active.
Suggested Grade Level: 2-5
Materials Needed: Presidential Active Lifestyle Log sheets, paper tennis shoes and paper hearts.
For every student, parent or staff member that completes the Presidential Active Lifestyle Challenge, a paper shoe with their name on it is displayed on the "Cardio-Character Wall". They also receive a PALA certificate at the quarterly awards ceremony. If they participate in a charity walk or fitness related event, walk an animal at the animal shelter, any other movement, related good deed, etc., a heart with their name on it is displayed on the wall. Students can also receive a heart if they display exceptional sportmanship and/or good character at recess. For example, inviting a special needs student to join a game, etc. If a person's name is displayed on the wall two or more times, they are invited to attend the Active Lifestyle Celebration in March. They receive a special invitation. This event is during the evening in the gym with inflatables. Our district owns large blow up obstacle courses, slides and bouncers that we call inflatables. I reserve them for the Active Lifestyle Celebration and they are delivered to my gym for the event. They can be rented at a local company. If teachers do not have the funds or access to inflatables, you can have a celebration that includes fun activities or stations that incorporate the students favorite activities in class. Since the celebration is held after school hours one option is to have the celebration at a park instead of the school.
