Name of Best Practice: 8th Grade Special Needs P.E. Project
Rationale/Purpose of Event: To help students without a disability to gain a new perspective about what it is like to have a physical disability. This experience will, in turn, help all students accept and better understand individuals who do have disabilities.
Suggested Grade Level: 6-12
Materials Needed: Blindfold, soundproof ear protection, wheelchair, or jacket with sleeves removed and sewen closed.
Throughout the year I try to stress to my students the importance of understanding that all people are unique and special, and that we all have different abilities. My eighth grade has the opportunity to experience what it is like to be someone with a physical disability. At the beginning of the year I lay out the guidelines of the project: Students are to: 1. select a disability (which can include being blind, deaf, in a wheelchair (paralyzed), or an amputee-no arms) to have during one class period in physical education. I have a sign up sheet for the day and what type of disability they will have ahead of time so I'm given the opportunity to plan. This project is not only for the kids to experience. It forces me to be creative and personally grow as a teacher. All of a sudden I have a student with a physical disability in my class. How do I adapt my lesson to include this student?
2. experience this disability during one class by using the equipment that was mentioned earlier.
3. write a one page paper about their experience and the emotions they went through during the class.
