Name of Best Practice: Fitness, Fun, and Family Week 2000

Rationale/Purpose of Event: To give our parents a chance to participate in selective activities with their children during physical education classes for one week. This event was a huge success with some parents coming back more than once. A great way to promote one's physical education program.

Suggested Grade Level: K-5

Materials Needed: Depends on the activities you choose.

I chose some of my (and our students) favorite activities and lessons that we have done in PE class from the past. I then typed up an activity sheet titled "Fitness, Fun, and Family Week 2000". This sheet listed what was to be done each day (in PE) for each grade level.

Once the idea was presented to the faculty here at Troutville, invitations were written by and sent home by the children and returned informing us the days that the parents planned on coming.

The event took place the week of February 21st to 25th, 2000 (Heart Month), with parents coming to the office and signing in before going to their child's class. We had over 70 parents participate including some grandparents as well. Some of the things we did included Footwork/Locomotor Drills, Aerobic Dancing, Fitness Jogging, Cooperative activities, Jump roping, Ghostbuster Hockey, Beachball Volleyball, and Parachute Activities.

The children enjoyed having their parents around and showing them what to do during the activities. We plan on doing this for years to come. This is a great way to show off some of the developmentally appropriate things that are done in PE Classes. May even want to purchase some of the Developmentally Appropriate Documents (from AAHPERD) and hand them out to parents.
