Purpose of Activity: Students will learn the definitions of physical fitness and also the five health-related components with use of a "visual" worksheet. Prerequisites: My students had been fitness-assessed in the fall prior to this information. They could all personally relate to the assessments, because they all performed them and compared their results to that of the Fitnessgram "Healthy Fitness Zone". Suggested Grade Level: 6-8 Materials Needed: Handout, Pencils and worksheet "Seeing Words Helps You Understand and Remember Them" from Scholastic Teaching Resources--Teaching Reading Description of Idea I displayed the definition of physical fitness and listed the five health-related components on a separate whiteboard. This could also be prepared on a powerpoint. We talked about which fitness assessments matched each component. The students formed small groups and created their definition of each of the five components and handed it in to the teacher who also had included the "real" definition (similar to the board game "Balderdash"). The definitions were read aloud and the student groups chose what they felt was the actual definition. As we continued through the five components, the students completed the worksheet drawing pictures for the five components and "physical fitness" and then wrote a definition "in their own words." Assessment Ideas: I assessed their personal and social responsibility (Standard 5) in their participation and completion of the tasks given (discussion, behavior, and worksheet completion). I also assessed their knowledge on the Common Summative Assessment at the end of the school year which is a fifteen-question, multiple-choice test. They are graded based upon the number of correct responses. Teaching Suggestions: An entire lesson plan with additional links to a visual museum and rubrics can be provided if emailed (gravdat@fargo.k12.nd.us) |
