Prerequisites: Expectations - when the music stops we freeze; knowledge of different types of movements. Suggested Grade Level: 1-3 Materials Needed: Music and a microphone is optional. Description of Idea Talk about the movements that will be used in the activity. Discuss safety - being in control of bodies and never touching or making contact with another student. The teacher will ask the students to perform different movements while music is playing. When the music stops, the teacher selects the first student that freezes (and did the movement correctly) to be the next "teacher." The new student "teacher" selects the next movement. The PE teacher plays the music again, stops it after 20-30 seconds and the student "teacher" selects the student who froze the fastest and performed the movement correctly to be the next student "teacher." Repeat until students are warmed up. Movements may include: hopping kangaroos or bear crawl, crab walk, rock stars, balance like a stork, karate kids, etc. Assessment Ideas: It is a great opportunity for the teacher to see which locomotor skills students have mastered and which they need more practice. |
