Name of Activity: Human Alphabet

Prerequisites: The students will need to know their letters to participate in this game.

Suggested Grade Level: 1-3

Materials Needed: A room or outside area with some open space so that students can move freely.

Description of Idea

The teacher will have the students spread out. On the teachers go signal students are asked to move in the activity area the way the teacher asks (walk, slide, skip, etc.). Students should continue to move until the teacher calls out a letter. When the students hear the letter they immediately partner up with the student closest to them and drop to the floor/ground and make that letter with their bodies. After everyone has made the letter with their partners, the teacher says "alphabet" and they all get up and start moving again. The teacher then calls out a new letter and the students partner up to the person closest to them (should be a different partner every time) and lay down on the floor/ground again and form the new letter with their partner. When the teacher says "alphabet" they all get up and move around until the next letter is called.

Variations:

Use different locomotor skills when students move around the play space

You can play this game using all capital letters or all lower case letters.

Instead of laying down to make the letter, try it standing up.

The first pair of students to make a letter can go up to the front of the room and call out the next letter.

For a challenge, try 3 kids to a letter, or to simplify try having every student just make the letter on their own.

Add in directions, pathways, and levels as they move.

Make the letters without lying on the floor. Have them use arms, legs, or even just their fingers to form a letter with a partner.
