Name/Title: Thankful Feathers

Purpose of Event: To encourage students to use appropriate behavior when participating in physical education.

Prerequisites: Students should have a clear understanding of what the class rules and protocols are.

Suggested Grade Level: 3-5

Materials Needed: Large construction paper turkey and feather cut-outs.

Description of Idea

At the beginning of November, make and place a large turkey cut-out on the wall for the classes in grades 3, 4, and 5. Leave the feathers off if you can. Therefore each class in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are represented by a turkey cut-out. You will also have to make individual turkey feathers that you will paste/attach to the turkey in the near future.

Carefully explain to the students that during classes in November you are going to be looking for classes that follow the rules very carefully. This means the entire class and not just individuals. When a class does a particularly good job in following and practicing the rules a feather is placed on their grade level's turkey. At the end of November the class with the most feathers earns a free physical education choice PE period.

NOTE: Students cannot have a feather taken away for inappropriate behavior.

Make sure you take time at the end of the class to explain to them why they did or did not get a feather. Hopefully this good behavior will go into the months following November.
