Name/Title: Line Drills Warm Up

Purpose of Event: When students are placed on a line for line drills, they often want to race one another. Using this activity, students will gain an understanding of how to warm up properly: Starting slowly (resting heart rate) increasing heart rate (training heart rate to maximum heart rate) and then cooling down (recovery heart rate).

Prerequisites: Students will be introduced to a proper warm up: RESTING HEART RATE, TRAINING HEART RATE, MAXIMUM HEART RATE, RECOVERY HEART RATE, I also teach them how to count to 10, using sign language, so that they can keep track of laps completed.

Suggested Grade Level: 4-6

Materials Needed: Basketball Sidelines,A poster with Locomoter Skills listed in large letters on one wall NUMBERS listed next to locomotor skills MUSIC to be used to time the activity

Description of Idea

Students will enter the gym and line up along the basketball sideline in their own personal space.
They will walk in a STRAIGHT pathway to the other sideline. We will check our RESTING HEART RATE.
On the wall across from them will be posted the following:
WALK 2
SLIDE 4
SKIP 6
JOG/RUN 10 (CHECK TRAINING/MAXIMUM HEART RATE)
SLIDE 2
SKIP 2
WALK to end of song (CHECK RECOVERY HEART RATE)

When the music begins students complete the list at their own pace! Keep track of each number using the sign language for numbers 1-10. If a student grows tired and can't complete the list, then hold their count on their fingers and continue to walk. When they are able to pick up where they left off, then continue the list.
When the song comes to an end, all students continue walking, whether they completed the list or not.
I then have them continue to walk in a STRAIGHT PATHWAY from sideline to sideline as I call out various dynamic stretches until heart rates have entered a recovery rate and our legs are stretched and ready for the day's lesson.

Assessment Ideas:

Students have an opportunity to gain an understanding of how our HEART RATE is a way to determine how vigorous our activity level is.
The line drills allow students to self assess.
Did they complete the list by the end of the song?
If not, did they get further down the list over time?
Does the student understand the difference between:RESTING, TRAINING, MAXIMUM, and RECOVERY HEART RATES?
Did the students learn how to count to 10 using SIGN LANGUAGE??

Adaptations for Students with Disabilities:

I have had students in wheelchairs come in the gym and join the line drills, while their assistant pushed their chairs from side to side. Because students are going at their own pace, the students in wheelchairs see lots of movement (and the assistant gets a nice 4-5 minute workout!)
