Title of Bulletin Board: Be a Germ Stopper

Category: Health

Suggested Grade Level: 1-5

Materials: Clip art, hand washing & flu posters, hand cut outs, Kleenex labels

Description:

"Be a Germ Stopper" Bulletin Board was created to raise awarness about the importance of keeping yourself healthy this cold and flu season.

My Superintendent asked me to talk to all the children in Grades 1 - 5, during their Health Classes, about how important it is to wash their hands and the teachers asked me to talk about how unhealthy picking their nose is. This bulletin board covers both subject.

Statements that were made next to the clip art pictures include:

Picking your nose spreads germs.
Boogers trap dirt and germs; their job is to help keep you healthy.
Eating boogers is not a good idea.
After blowing your nose throw the tissue away and wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
Flush the toilet; then wash your hands.
Wash your hands with soap and water before eating.
Wash your hands after taking care of or playing with your pets.

Additional Information:

During Health Classes I had the children make a "Germ Stopper" out of a lunch bag. The children decorated their bags. I told them that they could attach them to the side of their desk using tape. After they blow their nose they put the tissue in their bag and then use hand sanitizer after each blow. This keeps dirty tissues in a safe place where others won't come in contact with them. Using hand santizer at their desk does not interrupt the classroom teacher during their lessons. Lunch bags are then emptied or thrown away at the end of the day.
