Title of Bulletin Board: "If You Give a Cat a Cupcake"

Category: Nutrition

Suggested Grade Level: All

Materials: Yellow backing paper, markers, glitter, cupcake templates to color,

Description:

This bulletin board was created to reinforce the connection between health, nutrition and literacy. The specific book that served as motivation was "If you Give a Cat a Cupcake," by Laura Numeroff. I read this book to my students and we discussed the relationship between food and exercise. I then gave each student a template of a cupcake design. In the book, the author repeats the phrase "if you give the cat a cupcake..." Students were asked to complete that phrase by writing a favorite sport or exercise on the cupcake. Then, for cupcake sprinkles, we used glitter on the tops of the cupcakes. We stapled the cupcakes to the bulletin board that was backed with yellow paper. Students used markers to write the title in big bold letters. This bulletin board also served to reinforce our school's focus on literacy and literary characters. My students found the character of the cat very appealing.
